70d270e36df0accfb9a7fd116df85e14 I don’t want it to look like I don’t support writers developing their own culture or ecosystem. But, all this focus around formal ways of developing writers like writers centres and writing degrees, I do wonder if it is truly necessary. The great writers in the English language through time, so many of them were not developed in these kind of formal arrangements. They did practice their craft, but they also lived lives and gained valuable perspective to put into their work. It’s not that they didn’t learn from each other either, but informal writers’ collectives have been impactful too - just think of Frankenstein, an iconic book created from what can be described as an “informal writers’ retreat”. But writing has often been done within the world, not locked up in an institution that is sterile and requires government funding. Do we really need a writer’s centre to keep writing alive? I’m not convinced. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/988206/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:26:49 +1100

c6c3a5c7d9113ece31bfe03fe3f9c991 I'm still going to through Range - have had a few gaps in between reading. I appreciate the variety of examples used across different fields on multidisciplinary thinking. What most stood out to me was the Nintendo case study - I didn't know the company had such a long and storied history. But the underlying theme of using cheaper / older tech in inventive ways has been a long standing tradition. It explains why consoles that fit that theme perfectly became smash hits (Wii, Switch) and the times Nintendo stepped outside that frame it didn't work (Wii U, Virtual Boy). https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/990153/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:25:44 +1100

However I have read discussion about the casting choice for Heathcliff in the new movie adaption. Aside from the fact that white men have already portrayed Heathcliff in film, the fact it is left vague and ambiguous in the book means it is open to interpretation. I will though add my 2 cents on the matter of “what race is Heathcliff” and say, my opinion is that Heathcliff is Indian (and I’m referring to the larger original India, not the modern nation) based on the usage of the term “lascar” to describe him. I think the most likely scenario is that Heathcliff is an abandoned child of an Indian sailor operating on a British ship. Indians are genetically a diverse people and so the other comments made of Heathcliff being “dark skinned” and looking like a “gypsy” could be applied to an Indian boy/young man depending on features. I think this makes a lot more sense than the theory that Heathcliff is Black / African. But I’m happy to hear other theories. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/988126/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:25:24 +1100

…the unhauls are a direct response to a constant influx of new material, a stream of books that are pouring into a creators life. Because if they didn’t unhaul, but kept the books coming in, they would soon have to buy a new house because the current one is entirely filled with books.

The Lego Movie Series Shows The Masculinity Problems In Today’s Fathers

Bruce Wayne is portrayed as the ultimate emotionally stunted man-child. He lives in a giant house, avoids all emotional intimacy, and uses sarcasm and bravado to hide the deep grief of his childhood. (Sound like anyone famous you may know?...

c657fe3cba6ae0741594a778db4d3f16 There's a situation going on in BookTok about a 22 year old author/entrepreneur called Audra Winter who has been heavily criticised for releasing a badly written book. This is after a highly successful marketing campaign which gained her many preorders for her debut novel The Age of Scorpius, which is the supposed start of her fictional universe called World of Gardian. You can see the bad reviews here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/237611605-the-age-of-scorpius There’s a point that I’ve seen others touch on about this issue but not fully address. Simply, I think Audra Winter is not an author. She wants to be seen as an author, and is attempting to use fiction writing as the medium she works in, but she is not a true author in terms of where her skills and interests lie. It’s very apparent that when you look at where Audra actually displays some level of ability, it is in running a studio and indie publishing company rather then the actual writing itself. However, I think Audra wants the credit of being an author because the world of gardian is her IP and original concept. What she needs to do is get a ghostwriter to either co-write or completely write the fiction novels associated with World of Gardian, so that she can actually focus her time and energy on the team leading and production aspects that she is clearly more passionate about, and better skilled at. She’s already employing a team to create her world artistically, why not also employ help on the writing front? She can retain her status as the creator of the IP if she retains control of the company and provides the outline and plot notes to her ghostwriter to work off of. The end result is that she will have a more professional product at the end of it. Some people will not be interested in a ghostwritten book, but I think the audience that were already on board with this unconventional LLC approach of a multimedia studio that happened to be releasing a book would be willing to accept a ghostwriter or co-writer alongside all the other collaborators involved in this project. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/973313/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 00:20:17 +1100
