I didn’t realise we get the story from multiple perspectives which is nice. Story sets up quickly and we already have most of the classic signs of vampirism, it gets going quickly. Excited to see what happens next. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/994202/ Wed, 13 May 2026 00:45:20 +1000

c492113e33eeeb45ebfa5bf2145a2820 I have heard people say that books are getting increasingly dumber. It’s a hard thing to measure because the English language itself has changed over time so novels written at different time periods are hard to compare if the standard of English is different. However - underlying story structure is not language dependant and I have seen some examples to suggest that popular stories written in English are less complex and/or less coherent. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/992960/ Sun, 03 May 2026 06:52:59 +1000

More evidence that there is a group of women who wish to be still in high school whereby things were clearly laid out, responsibilities were minimal and the biggest problem was what color highlighter you used for your notes in class. be4c596bb54d42e893eefa2b467741c7 I started reading this book over the weekend. While the view while reading was great, I just wasn't feeling it and decided to put it down after the first few chapters. I'll go back to something else. I was borrowing this book from someone else, and if it's a book that's been loaned to you my opinion is "read it or give it back, don't hold onto someone else's book for ages". General common courtesy, https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/988968/ Sun, 03 May 2026 06:52:32 +1000

70d270e36df0accfb9a7fd116df85e14 I don’t want it to look like I don’t support writers developing their own culture or ecosystem. But, all this focus around formal ways of developing writers like writers centres and writing degrees, I do wonder if it is truly necessary. The great writers in the English language through time, so many of them were not developed in these kind of formal arrangements. They did practice their craft, but they also lived lives and gained valuable perspective to put into their work. It’s not that they didn’t learn from each other either, but informal writers’ collectives have been impactful too - just think of Frankenstein, an iconic book created from what can be described as an “informal writers’ retreat”. But writing has often been done within the world, not locked up in an institution that is sterile and requires government funding. Do we really need a writer’s centre to keep writing alive? I’m not convinced. https://www.crokes.com/activity/p/988206/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:26:49 +1100

The writer should be reckless and dangerous, to herself and others. An editor should have to fight the writer to the bitter-end trying to tame this wild beast but our wild beasts are drowned out by tens of thousands of people born in captivity and exploited into thinking they have something original to say.
